Laos is a serene and timeless country, which is often overlooked by visitors despite its cultural and natural treasures. The country was once known as Lane Xang, or "Million Elephants," and was founded in the 14th century with the assistance of the Khmers. It went on to become one of the largest kingdoms in Southeast Asia until the late 19th century. Today, Laos is a melting pot of cultural influences such as Theravada Buddhism, animism, France, and socialist ideology. The country is peaceful and its people are known for their legendary hospitality, resilience, and friendliness. Laos is like a time capsule, preserving the old Asia that once was.

As you journey downriver, you will stop at some tribal minority villages, including the Hmong, Yao, and Khmu. Upon arrival in Pakbeng, you will have the opportunity to visit the local market and experience the daily lifestyle of colorful hill tribe traders exchanging their goods. You will spend the night in Pakbeng.

After breakfast, we will venture into the mountainous and remote area of Northern Laos to reach Oudomxay. This province is home to 23 ethnic minority groups, and we’ll make a few rest stops along the way so that you can meet some of them. Hill tribe people are unfailingly friendly, welcoming visitors with waving hands and smiling faces. We will stop at the pottery village of Ban Yor and some other tribal minority villages. The most numerous ethnic group in the area is the Lao (the ethnic majority), followed by the Khammu and H’mong. Only the senior members of the latter still wear traditional clothes and hairstyles, often combined with modern garments. The other inhabitants are now all dressed in western style. The houses, in contrast, continue to be built according to tradition, and it is interesting to see how each ethnic group differs from the others in both the conception of home and all the rituals and customs related to daily life, such as initiation into adulthood, marriage, work, celebrations, and funerals. We will arrive at Namkat Yolapa in the late afternoon. After checking into your hotel, you will have some free time to relax and explore the surroundings at your leisure. Overnight in Namkat.

Upon arrival, we will begin our trek along a mountain trail that follows a mountain stream through lush vegetation. You will have the opportunity to meet local farmers working in their rice fields, and learn about their farming practices, as well as hunting and fishing in the mountain stream. After about 1.5 hours, we will leave the forest and arrive at Ban Phavie, a beautiful Khamu village located on top of a hill. After having lunch in the village, we will continue on to nearby waterfalls, where you can relax in the refreshing waters and enjoy the peaceful surroundings (weather permitting). We will return to Namkat Yolapa at around 2:30 PM and arrive in the late afternoon.

After a short rest, we will visit The National Museum at the former Royal Palace, which displays a beautiful collection of artifacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture throughout the ages. We will also visit Wat Mai and climb up to the top of Mount Phousi to explore the sacred, gilded stupa and enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Mekong River at sunset. Finally, we will visit the Night Market, where you can browse through a lovely selection of handmade textiles. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Next, we will continue our excursion to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall. Along the way, we will stop at the Buffalo Dairy Farm, where we will take a 40-minute tour that includes a guided tour of the mini farm, feeding and washing the buffalo, a milking demonstration, and feeding chickens and rabbits. After the tour, we will visit some ethnic minority villages to learn more about how these colorful people live.

Then, we will continue to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall where we can swim in the turquoise pools or walk along forest paths. On our return to the city, we will stop at Wat Phabath to observe the sunset. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
